Why Medical Spanish Matters for NPs
Nurse practitioners are often a patient’s main primary care clinician — taking the history, performing the examination and explaining next steps, visit after visit. In practices with a significant Spanish-speaking patient population, that means the quality of your Spanish directly shapes the quality of the encounter: the rapport you build, the details you catch, and how comfortable the patient feels.
Working on your medical Spanish helps you:
- Build rapport with Spanish-speaking patients from the first greeting
- Take a clearer history and ask better follow-up questions
- Recognize how patients actually describe symptoms, not just textbook terms
- Give examination and medication instructions more confidently
- Earn CME credit for training you would want to do anyway
Learning medical Spanish does not replace a professional medical interpreter. Use a qualified interpreter whenever accurate, safe communication matters — consent, diagnosis, treatment decisions and discharge instructions included. This course is a complement to interpreter services, not a substitute.
Learn the Spanish You'll Actually Use in Clinic
This is not a general Spanish course with a few medical words added. Every module is built around a clinical encounter — a dialogue between a clinician and a patient, the vocabulary that encounter needs, and practice using it. The clinical vocabulary track covers:
- Greeting and building rapport with patients
- Taking a history and asking follow-up questions
- Pain assessment — location, quality, severity, timing
- Physical examination instructions
- Symptoms and body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, GI, neuro, derm, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopedics
- Pediatrics, women’s health, men’s health, obstetrics and prenatal care
- Emergency and urgent care encounters
- Medicines and pharmacy instructions
- Mental health and geriatrics conversations
- Serious illness, oncology and end-of-life discussions
- Hispanic health beliefs, family dynamics and cultural communication
Learn Around Your Clinic Schedule
The course is built in short segments — roughly five to ten minutes each — so it fits around clinic days, not the other way round. Study between patients, on your commute or after your shift, on a laptop or on your phone. Nothing is scheduled and there's no subscription: you pay once and keep access with no renewal fees, so a busy stretch never costs you your place.
Progress is tracked module by module, and every lesson can be revisited as often as you like — before a new rotation, a new specialty or a new job.
One-Time Pricing — No Subscription

Do I Need to Speak Spanish Already?
The curriculum covers Beginner to Intermediate Medical Spanish. The grammar track genuinely starts at the beginning: the Spanish alphabet and pronunciation, articles and gender, plural forms, present tense, and ser vs estar. From there it builds through past tenses, commands, reflexive verbs and the compound tenses you need to discuss a patient's history.
Approximate CEFR range: A1–B1
Already speak some Spanish? General Spanish and clinical Spanish are not the same thing. Even conversational speakers benefit from the healthcare vocabulary, patient questioning and clinical communication practice. If you are already comfortably conversational, live tutoring may be the better fit for advanced speaking practice.
What's Included
- 26 clinical vocabulary modules covering specialty-by-specialty patient language
- 25 grammar modules progressing from beginner to intermediate in a medical context
- Native Mexican-Spanish audio for dialogues and vocabulary, plus pronunciation practice
- Quizzes and end-of-module assessments to check what actually stuck
- CME certificate for each track you complete
- One-time purchase with no subscription, and a 14-day money-back guarantee (fair-use limit applies)
Free apps and word lists are useful for memorizing vocabulary, but they don't give you a sequenced curriculum, clinical dialogues recorded by native speakers, assessments that check your recall, or accredited CME at the end. That structure is the difference between recognizing words and being able to use them in front of a patient.
What Clinicians Are Saying
Real feedback from healthcare professionals using the course in everyday patient care.
“I really enjoyed this course. It focused on the kind of Spanish that is actually useful in clinic, with just enough grammar to help me put together sentences I would use in real patient conversations. It felt practical, easy to follow, and very relevant to everyday patient care. I highly recommend it!”
“The modules are short enough to fit between patients, and the clinical dialogues sound like my actual exam room. I went from relying on interpreters to confidently taking basic histories in Spanish.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Medical Spanish course designed for nurse practitioners?
+
Yes. The course is built for clinicians who take histories, perform examinations and explain findings to patients — which is exactly what NPs do every day. The clinical scenarios, vocabulary and dialogues reflect family practice, pediatrics, women’s health, adult-gerontology, urgent care and specialty encounters that NPs work in.
Can nurse practitioners use these credits for recertification or licensure?
+
Yes. The activities are AAFP Prescribed accredited, and AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ by many licensing and credentialing bodies. The Complete Bundle carries 38.25 AAFP Prescribed credits — 19.5 for the clinical vocabulary track and 18.75 for the grammar track. NP certifying boards and state boards of nursing set their own continuing education rules, so confirm with your certifying body (for example AANPCB or ANCC) and your state board how AAFP Prescribed credits apply to your recertification or license renewal.
How much does the course cost?
+
The Medical Spanish track is $280 (about $14 per CME credit), the Grammar track is $220 (about $12 per credit), and the Complete Bundle is $390 (about $10 per credit) — all one-time purchases with no subscription. NP students with a verified .edu email address receive 25% off.
Do I need to speak Spanish already?
+
No. The course supports beginner to intermediate Medical Spanish. The grammar track starts with the alphabet, pronunciation and present tense, so a true beginner can follow it, while NPs with some Spanish can move directly toward stronger clinical communication. Approximate CEFR range: A1–B1.
How does the course fit around a clinic schedule?
+
The course is fully online and self-paced, built in short segments of roughly five to ten minutes. There are no live class times, so you can study between patients, after clinic or on days off, on a laptop or on your phone. Progress is tracked module by module, so a busy stretch costs you nothing.
What do I receive when I finish?
+
When you complete a track you receive a downloadable certificate documenting your AAFP Prescribed CME credits and the structured Medical Spanish training you completed — useful for CME records, credentialing files and performance reviews.
Can Medical Spanish replace a professional medical interpreter?
+
No, and no course should claim otherwise. In US health systems, working in Spanish without an interpreter normally requires a passed language proficiency assessment. Treat this training as a complement to interpreter services, not a substitute for them.
Is there a discount for NP students?
+
Yes. NP students who verify an academic (.edu) email address receive 25% off: the Medical Spanish track is $210 instead of $280, the Grammar track $165 instead of $220, and the Complete Bundle $293 instead of $390. The same discount applies to medical, PA, nursing and other healthcare students.
